General Gynaecology

General (Benign) Gynaecology deals with problems of the female genital tract: vulva, vagina, cervix (neck of womb), womb, Fallopian tubes and ovaries. The word ‘Benign’ refers to problems that are not cancerous.

The common problems experienced by women are;

  • Period problems (most commonly heavy or painful periods)
  • Irregular or abnormal bleeding (e.g. between periods, after sexual intercourse or after the menopause)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Ovarian cysts.

These problems have several possible causes, and therefore require appropriate investigation by a gynaecologist in order to determine a cause if possible and to provide suitable treatment options.

Some problems may initially appear benign, but after further investigation, a more sinister cause is found. This will prompt rapid onward referral to our Gynaecological Cancer subspecialist for further management.
